The Storage Replica Video Series: Plan Your Replication using Test-SRTopology in Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 2

Hi folks, Ned here again. Yesterday I introduced my new video series on Storage Replica in Windows Server 2016 TP2 with an example of Stretch Cluster disaster recovery. Today I show off a brand new feature, the Test-SRTopology cmdlet.

The Test-SRTopology cmdlet arrives when you install the “Storage Replica Module for Windows PowerShell” feature using Server Manager or Install-WindowsFeature.

Here’s the beauty of it - you don’t need to install SR to find out how well SR will work. You just need this cmdlet. When run, it verifies that servers meet requirements, tells you the write IO load the servers handle currently, estimates how long initial sync will take, and gives you advice on log sizing – all in a pretty graphical report.

But this is supposed to be a video blog post – to the Tubes!

There’s that crummy voice again. Argh, stop sounding like you are from Chicago, Ned!

There you have it, a cmdlet so simple even I can use it, with results so plain even I can understand them. There are tons of improvements coming to this tool, I can’t wait to share them.

Tune in tomorrow for Storage Replica running over a 25km fiber network!

Until next time,

  - Ned “Maybe I could direct one of those craptastic lost footage horror movies” Pyle
